Abstract

The article “The Scientific Contributions of Dr. Mario M. Carrillo Huerta’s Work to the Mexican School of Regional Development: A Transdisciplinary Perspective,” by Sergio Flores González and Olga Vázquez Guzmán, analyzes five decades of academic, scientific, and public administration work by Dr. Carrillo, a central figure in the consolidation of the Mexican School of Regional Development. Using a mixed methodology (historical-descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative), the study examines the evolution of regional thought in its relationship to the paradigms of sustainable development, regional science, and public policy, articulating theory and practice in national and international contexts. The text identifies four stages in his career: academic training, initial production, the combination of research and public service, and scientific consolidation. Among his contributions are the application of the Human Development Index (UN-UNDP) at territorial levels, the promotion of postgraduate programs, the creation of institutions such as El Colegio de Tlaxcala, and the fostering of a transdisciplinary vision aimed at reducing social and territorial inequalities. The research reveals the impact of his work in Latin America, Central America, and various regions of Mexico, highlighting his role in human capital development and the creation of sustainable regional policies. In their conclusions, the authors emphasize the need to strengthen collaboration among universities, governments, and civil society to address the challenges of climate change, structural poverty, and the crisis of traditional economic models, reaffirming the continued relevance of regional science as a driver of social transformation.
