High healthcare costs in developed economies and long waiting times are increasing the demand for health services in emerging countries. In this context, the availability of affordable procedures and the international recognition of hospitals through certifications that guarantee quality and safety create a highly competitive landscape for health destinations. The objective of this study is to analyze the importance of such certifications in healthcare institutions serving tourists during pre- and post-operative medical interventions. Using an exploratory and analytical methodology based on a tourism competitiveness model, the study identified a lack of regulated accommodations for pre- and post-operative patients. It concludes that international accreditations certifying comprehensive hospitality services during patient preparation and recovery are necessary, guaranteeing service quality as a strategy for territorial competitiveness.
