In Mexico, as of the energy reform of 2013, the technology of photovoltaic solar panels and wind
turbines is promoted, which requires the use of various minerals, mainly lithium. Thus, in 2022
reforms to the Mining Law are approved, focused on the nationalization of this strategic mineral.
This essay analyzes the importance of lithium in energy matters and the implications of the Mining
Law now in place. In addition, an analysis of the geo-location of the mineral is made for the three
states that have the largest number of deposits in Mexico: Sonora, Puebla, and Oaxaca. Among the
conclusions, it is pointed out that there are many elements that are not clear in the Mining Law
regarding the exploration and exploitation of this mineral, as well as its contribution to the energy
transformation of Mexico.
